Good evening everyone
Getting ready for my hospital stay but as promised and for a bit of entertainment for you, I have had a look at the Newbury Spring Cup on Saturday and what a tremendously competitive race it looks but these are the races I absolutely adore and this seasons renewal will throw up plenty of future winners so well worth recording (as I will have to do due to not being able to see it on the day:().
It is a bit early to be strong as the forecast ground and draw are total unknowns and I have a feeling our tip for the Lincoln, LEADER WRITER, will run well but with the sun baking down the ground may go against him and who knows how it will be riding come 3:45PM Saturday afternoon??
As a result I cannot confidently select anything at this stage but the 2 I like a lot tonight are GRAPHITE STORM & REPERCUSSION. Both look improvers and Graphite Storm goes very well at this course and caught my eye for this race with a cracking 2nd in a good 7 furlong handicap last year as a 3 year old against the veteran Squats. Now 4, he looks sure to improve and with the Clive Cox (who does well here generally) stable in good form, if ready to roll and in the right berth he will go well. 16-1 5 places at the time of writing with BetfairSBook & Paddy Power looks fair.
Repercussion won a nice handicap at Newmarket on his last outing of last season winning comfortably by 5 lenghts! Put up 10lb for that romp I thought that may scupper him for the time being but having watched the Lincoln re-run he was absolutlely tanking, (arguably going as well as the winner 2 out) before meeting trouble and staying on nicely in ground that was important not to lose momentum on. His tracking the pace style of running suits this course and if he too is berthed in the right place (look at Fridays races if you can) 20-1 5 places at the time of writing with BetfairSBook & Paddy Power looks too big.
There are no prices available on Oddschecker for the concluding race on the card which is a nice 1mile 2furlong handicap (which I feel again will throw up winners) but we have a couple in there who did us big favours last season.
As you know by now I love 4 year olds and the 3 in here I concentrated on will ALL win races for us this season I feel. The races where ROAD TO DUBAI & LUNAR JET clashed look key and they were both eyecatchers numerous times. Road To Dubai caught the eye with a good effort at Wolverhampton 35 days ago so fitness could be vital. Jimmy Quinn gets on well with Lunar Jet, if the ground is right and fit enough, both should go well.
RAKES PROGRESS was upped in trip and pitched in against quality horses in Classy, class 2 handicaps after his cosy course and distance win and he could get the run of the race and go well if applying the same fitness & ground criteria to the above.
I don’t know where the prices are from, but The Sporting Life have them priced up at 10, 12-1 & 12-1 respectively and if anywhere near those tomorrow evening/Saturday morning they look very reasonable to me (unfortunately I won’t be able to have a dabble)
The 2 mile Scottish Champion hurdle handicap at Ayr is not finalised but CHESTERFIELD looks sure to go well if taking his chance. Won the race well last year and caught the eye in the county hurdle.
Hope that has given you a bit of a heads up for Saturday. It is early in the season so if you do decide to have any investments/interests in them tread carefully.
